Networking 201 – Example “60 second elevator speech” video with next level tips. A link to a great networking interview with two experts.

Hello again –

Most networking groups give you a chance to have the floor for 60 seconds to give your “pitch”. But please, the last thing you want to do is sell. Networking is for building relationships and trust over time.

There are a lot of different ways to go about it and you may want to get a different point across depending on the day. Keep in mind you are always giving examples of how you help other businesses solve a problem. The more specific you can get the more memorable you are and have a better chance of not being forgotten as white noise.

When it comes down to it I personally use networking groups as an intro to try and set up a 1 on 1 networking based meeting with as many people as possible. It ALL goes down in the individual coffee meetings. Get to know someone and try to get to similar interests or common goals and run with it.

Lastly, you have to get into a mindset to give give give without expectation. Give your expertise for free, give your attention, and make introductions. It will pay off in the end. Don’t look for something in return or make it transactional.

Happy networking!

I know this isn’t really digital marketing expertise, but I’m trying to practice what I preach and hope this info can help some people out there who may not know what to expect.

Links mentioned in my video:

Meetup.com – Pro Tips: go to “Career and Business” or get really real and “Create a Meetup” at the top.

Eventbrite.com – Another event curator to use for networking.

Converge is affiliated with North Central College in Naperville. They have free classes and are an interesting up and coming incubator space.

NextDoor Chicago – is a State Farm funded free coworking space/coffee shop (not free but pretty decent food too) in Lakeview on Diversey. They are trying to be a good neighbor (literally) and also offer free classes. Check out the schedule and learn something and network with others if you feel like it.

Below are 2 links to the 2 parts of the interview I mentioned with Matthew Pollard (The Introvert’s Edge Book and Podcast) and Dr. Ivan Misner (Founder of BNI). A must watch from my standpoint!
